Why is copper so important on PCBs? Its impact on electronic products is beyond imagination!

Why is copper so important on PCBs? Its impact on electronic products is beyond imagination!

2025-08-27

1. Conductivity – Stable current flow and stable circuits

Copper is the conductive material in circuit boards. The thicker the copper layer, the smoother the current flows, and the more stable the signal transmission. If the copper layer is too thin, the current will be unstable, the signal will be easily lost, and the circuit will be prone to problems. Just like a narrow water pipe, the water flow will be blocked, and the current will be "stuck".

2. Heat Dissipation – Heat up quickly, cool down quickly!

Modern electronic devices are becoming increasingly powerful and generate more heat. The thickness of the copper layer determines its heat dissipation efficiency. If the copper layer is too thin, the heat cannot be dissipated, the device will easily overheat, and components will be easily damaged. Just like a rice cooker, a thick base allows heat to dissipate quickly and is less likely to overheat.

3. Stability – Withstands abuse and lasts longer

In addition to conductivity and heat dissipation, copper thickness also determines the strength of the circuit board. A sufficiently thick copper layer prevents the board from bending or breaking, resulting in better soldering quality and a longer service life. Simply put, the thicker the copper, the sturdier and less prone to failure!

4. Cost and Performance—Finding the Optimal Balance

Of course, a thicker copper layer is better, but it also increases costs. PCB manufacturers must choose copper thickness based on product requirements and budget. Just like buying a mobile phone: good performance is great, but the price must also be right. Finding the "golden copper thickness" ensures product quality without wasting money. (Figure 4: Cost and Performance Comparison of Different Copper Thicknesses)

In summary: Copper thickness is the "health guarantee" for electronic products!

In general, copper thickness significantly impacts a PCB's electrical conductivity, heat dissipation, stability, and durability. Choosing the right copper thickness ensures better performance, longer durability, and prevents frequent malfunctions. So, next time you use an electronic device, remember the copper layer behind it; it silently supports the healthy operation of your device!
